چکیده

In this paper we present the r ontology, a foundational ontology for reactive rules, aiming at coping with language heterogeneity at the rule (component) level. This (OWL-DL) ontology is at a low (structural) abstraction level thus fostering its extension. Although focusing on reactive rules (reactive derivation rules not excluded), the r ontology defines a vocabulary that allows also for the definition of rule (component) languages to model other types of rules like production, integrity, or logical derivation rules.

Word Tagging with Foundational Ontology Classes: Extending the WordNet-DOLCE Mapping to Verbs

Semantic annotation is fundamental to deal with large-scale lexical information, mapping the information to an enumerable set of categories over which rules and algorithms can be applied, and foundational ontology classes can be used as a formal set of categories for such tasks. A previous alignment between WordNet noun synsets and DOLCE provided a starting point for ontology-based annotation, ...

Aligning Anatomical Ontologies: The Role of Complex Structural Rules

An ontology is a formal representation of a domain supporting a variety of tasks. A given domain is often represented by multiple ontologies, providing overlapping, yet different coverage and possibly differing in their representation of the domain knowledge. There is a need for creating mappings among such ontologies in order to facilitate knowledge sharing and reuse. Anatomy is central to the...

ONSET: Automated Foundational Ontology Selection and Explanation

It has been shown that using a foundational ontology for domain ontology development is beneficial in theory and practice. However, developers have difficulty with choosing the appropriate foundational ontology, and why. In order to solve this problem, a comprehensive set of criteria that influence foundational ontology selection has been compiled and the values for each parameter determined fo...

Feasibility of Automated Foundational Ontology Interchangeability

While a foundational ontology can solve interoperability issues among the domain ontologies aligned to it, multiple foundational ontologies have been developed. Thus, there are still interoperability issues among domain ontologies aligned to different foundational ontologies. Questions arise about the feasibility of linking one’s ontology to multiple foundational ontologies to increase its pote...

The Use of Foundational Ontologies in Ontology Development: An Empirical Assessment

There is an assumption that ontology developers will use a top-down approach by using a foundational ontology, because it purportedly speeds up ontology development and improves quality and interoperability of the domain ontology. Informal assessment of these assumptions reveals ambiguous results that are not only open to different interpretations but also such that foundational ontology usage ...
